Before putting it in the fire, you'd punch a hole in it to let the steam out, or remove the lid if putting it on a stove.

I didn't read where you were from but here in Ky, you can go to most any Foodland or IGA and buy canned water packaged in aluminum cans identical to soda. I just bought two cases Thursday and the exp date for them is 08/21/06. Just thought you may try on of these places if they are close to you. They cost $1.99 per 12 pack here for 12 ounce cans.

When I was in the U.S. Air Force we carried vacuum packed water in cans on the aircraft survival kits. We flew EC-135 Airborne Command Posts, and they had to carry a fair amount of gear for a crew of 10-20 people. The airplanes sat on the ramp in the middle of winter in South Dakota and I’m sure the water was frozen solid, but I don’t recall hearing about problems with leaking cans when they thawed out.

I did a little bit of searching but could not find any sources (on-line) for vacuum packed water, but perhaps someone else here could offer a suggestion.
