Having followed this story from the beginning I was quite relieved to learn the boy was found alive and unharmed. The actions of the parents seem shocking on one level but it was probably more anger and frustration than malice; they almost certainly had no inkling that he would get lost like that. Still there's no excuse for such behavior.

I guess they meant just to scare him, perhaps intending to pick him up a few hours later. According to The Telegraph, "his father had made Yamato get out of the family car and driven about half a mile away – before returning to the same spot only minutes later but was then unable to find him." So minutes, not hours.

After hearing of this story last week, I asked my eight-year-old son whether he would have been able to survive. The conversation was a classic.
Me: "Do you think you could survive for six days in the forest by yourself?" Kid sits down and thinks seriously for a moment. Kid: "Well, it would be hard. I would need to bring some string with me so I could make a bow & arrows and hunt, and I don't think I could make my own string from a tree, but I could get wood from a tree. But oh, wait, how would I cut the wood from the tree? (Thinks for a moment.) Oh, I know! I would need to find a pet beaver to cut the trees for me!"
I love the way kids' minds work!

One day, many years back, my daughter (maybe around 7 y.o. too ) misbehaved several times, and no amount of persuation or bribing was working to make her behave. I did the same to her, only took her outside the apartment door and told her we don't want her anymore. A few minutes later her mom opened the door, got her in and asked her to apologize.
I am now 60+. Daughter is married with a son, and I swear to God I am not able to forget or forgive myself for doing that. I have apologized to her a few years back, but still cannot forgive myself to this day.
This story. I feel for the boy. But I am speechless !!
BTW, my daughter still remembers the story. I cam just imagine what is going in the boy's head.
