I've found the liners help keep the poncho draped in wind. In a survival situation nothing else is as versatile for rigging an expedient shelter. Some ponchos have a waist drawstring. I replaced mine with a doubled length of paracord. Its just right for stringing a ridgeline. This is hardly a 5 star hotel, but the poncho detractors have never gone out with nothing.
