Hello Gang

A question for you all. Are coughlans magnesium fire starters any good/ better than the Doan ones?.

Thanks
Lee

I can't speak from experience, but I've read that the Doan's are better. I want to say that I read a review of the two on a website somewhere.

Try here first -> http://www.oldjimbo.com/survival/doan.html

Hope it is of some help.

Buy the Doans. It is hard enough mastering, or choosing one system or strategy with first line gear. I could have ignited the money wasted on the Coughlans with my angry glare. The flint literally went flying off into never- never land with my first scrape <img src="/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

I've tested both, and they felt pretty much even to me... at least compared to a real fire steel like a swedish fire steel (this is what I carry). I think larger steels are better suited to ignite natural tinder. They also last longer and spark hotter than the magnesium ones.

You can find some pure magnesium in many places if you want to use it as tinder. I carry a small piece of it from an old VolksWagen engine block (they used to be made in magnesium). Cost me about 5$ and I've got roughly 4 pounds of the stuff. It ignites perfectly well.

Cheers,

David

I've got an old mag concrete float that I've cut pieces off. Works pretty good. POOL
