OK..first off i know the Coleman people did not make these cans for survivalists to store gas in for 10-12+ years.

and this can sat in a wood box in my damp basement until this summer when i noticed even the tops of the newer cans were getting rusty so i moved them all out to the garage.
and that can has the blue tape on it because i was keeping
kerosine in it for my camp stoves.i have a 5 gallon plastic can for the main kero storage but filling stoves from a small can works better.
back to plastic and don't reuse old cans,i get it....

these are the rusty cans in the basement.i got lucky because out in the garage i had three empty cans that i just
had sitting around and swapped the gas out into those.

Was the leakage from the top seam or the bottom?

I have a similar array of aging cans (pre-Y2K). Though mine aren't that rusty.

Ah. Mine are stored in the attached garage in what's considered a dry climate. (except when a snow-covered car is parked there in the winter)

Anybody know if Coleman fuel can be used in place of gasoline in lawnmower or motorcycle? I know it's called "white gas" but don't want to try the experiment if others have already wrecked something ahead of me.....

I haven't tried it. I understand it has an Octane rating of about 55, so in an older lawnmower or generator, it will probably work.

In a newer lawnmower or generator, designed for modern gas, or in any motor vehicle, I wouldn't try it unless I was desperate. It hasn't got the additives that these motors were designed for, and is likely to damage them.

Humidity is one of the most destructive forces of mother nature. I bet that the fuel is fine; just the metal if going bad. Maybe try some plastic fuel containers for long term storage.

Sadly, another lesson in the wisdom of checking and rotating supplies on a scheduled basis (not a criticism as something similar happened to me a couple of years ago in my basement). We all know better, but still. . . .well, life catches up with us!
