I came across this watch and thought it may be useful since it would work as an EDC item for my suit wearing job. But not knowing a lot about compasses, I wonder if this would actually work and be somewhat reliable/accurate being so close to the steel watch case. I would appreciate any input regarding the compass part of this watch. Thanks!

Derek,

I hate wearing wristwatches, so I just got this Dakota Angler 2 from C&C Outdoors:

It's got a compass, thermometer, hook sharpener, and a red LED light, and i don't have to wear it on my wrist. The compass is button-compass sized, I don't know how that compares to the Wenger.

Hi JOEGREEN,

Looks interesting, I like the combo of uses. Does the compass work so close to the watch? Thanks for your input.

Combinations like this usually employ some simple dampening to negate any false reading. Remember that ships are steel affairs with several compasses aboard. I have a modest Wenger wristwatch that serves me well.

Derek,

It seems to work fine. The watch frame is made of aluminum (non-magnetic). It's okay for general direction finding, which is about all I'll need it for. I don't think you'd want to use it to navigate in the woods. <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Really, the main reason I got it was the carabiner clip. Hope that helps.
