My Dad is living within 10 miles of the Mississippi River and may have to evacuate in the near future. I get home on the 4th and will break my camper out of storage on the 5th and set it up at the local campground until the river goes down.
This type of event is the reason we purchased the camper last Spring. It is equipped except for putting food in the fridge and freezer.

When is the Mississippi slated to overflow and when will it crest near your Dad's home?

Our camper is an Outback 236TR. It has a small toy box in the front and a slide out King size bed in the rear. It will be my Dad and his small dog staying in it, if he has to evacuate from the Natchez, Ms (Louisiana side). We live in the one area that stayed above water during the Flood of 1927. Besides having all of the amenities in a commercial campground, I have a small BBQ Pit and a portable dog pen system that I will set up. There is also a separate canopy that we erect over the picnic table and/or dog pen area when shade is needed. BTW: This camper will sleep 8 but that would be a very tight living situation but it sleeps 4 very comfortably.

The Mississippi River will crest at 60 ft on Jan 18th. Flood stage is at 48'.
The biggest threat is the Levee System around Lake Providence, La. That is the weakest section, historically speaking. If it goes, then it 's "Katy Bar the Door" time! A third of Louisiana will grow upwards of an inch or two by the time the waters drain into the Gulf.

Thank you Jacque. We Cajuns are former Canadians who refused to swear allegiance to King George III. We survived the Brits by floating south, we'll survive this by climbing trees if necessary.

Jan 18th gives you time for an orderly withdrawal. Hope he is packing as we type; take everything not nailed down. Once the river soaks everything in its pristine waters there may not be much left that's salvageable -- but you know that, that's why you're setting him up in his own place. This is going to be a mess if that levee fails.

Can your Dad cover stuff that can't be moved? I'm thinking 6 mil plastic/polyethylene sheeting to cover stuff and help with clean-up after the water subsides. Or does that mud just find its way everywhere. Then there's the whole black mold issue...

If the river water touches it, forget it. We'll clear as much of his stuff out that we can and I do have a place to store his stuff. He is well insured including Flood Insurance.

Hope things work out in your favour. Tip o' the hat for looking after others.
So what's driving this crest? I'm seeing reports of extreme weather in the U.K., Iceland, and the Arctic. Just trying to connect the dots on a frisky planet with dicey reporting ...

The UK, Iceland, etc are all getting the same weather we had after the storm recharged itself over the Atlantic. The Germans established weather stations in Greenland, during WW2 because that forecast the weather over Britain two days later. The USCG would locate and normally take those stations out within a month.
