If like me, you are concerned about earthquakes, I think you will find http://temblor.net/ a useful site. Gives scientifically based, free earthquake estimates based on your address. Mobile apps are available.

Just a satisfied user....

Interesting but I do not want another app on my phone. I went to the Temblor.net website and found the kits they offer; they like headlamps, but they prefer a cellphone to a radio for news. It may be a generational thing with younger folk not knowing about old technology like analog AM radio. whistle

I find it interesting that they presume cellular signals will be available. AM radio signals may be available from outside the earthquake zone while local cell towers may be effected. Don't know about you, but my AM/FM Sony radio is way easier on batteries than is my iPhone... or am I the one being presumptuous?

I would think the mobile phone app would be useful only before an event - especially in locating fault structures in a given landscape. To me, these are the most useful features:

Quakes & faults near you

Liquefaction & landslide potential

Your U. S. seismic hazard rank

Your risk of quake damage

Retrofit benefit-cost estimate

I was agreeably surprised by my relatively low risk of damage, although I remain cautious....

As far as kits are concerned, I have yet to see a commercial unit that is worthwhile. DIY rules!
