The height of pot over the stove would depend on if any Federal DEA agents or Police were in the area.

I would say, the lower, the better as long as you don't burn the pot needlessly.

Optimal hieght will have a few variables in play; size of pot, burn rate etc. Remember that the surrounding air is both part of the combustion of many fuels and the actual temperature of the flame. To far, and it takes forever to heat anything, to close and you get incomplete combustion with soot a by product instead of released energy. This is a hot air reply that boils down to EXPERIMENT.
