Ah, those crazy Alaskans. This is the feel-good story of the year. Not quite in time for Christmas; must be a time zone thing. http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news/worl...9951/story.htmlWe mountain travellers gotta stick together.

Thanks for posting. That story came out the other day in our local paper. I meant to pass it on to ETS at the time but got distracted and never got around to posting it. Here is the link to the original version: http://www.adn.com/article/20150101/snow...he-hatcher-passAnimals do get caught in slides from time to time, just like people. I recall a few years back that in the spring some biologists found a whole herd of caribou (at least 143) that had been caught in an avalanche down on the Kenai Peninsula. Caribou, like humans, probably develop a sense of complacency about the risks they are exposed to, based upon their previous successes of having survived similar exposure (though not identical conditions) many times in their lives That herd mentality will kill you.

What about the skier who made the track mentioned in the article?

The article dosesn't say so, but apparently no skier was caught. To my knowledge there are no reports of missing skiers in the area. Presumably the skier passed through the area before the slide.
The usual procedure is to count tracks going into slide vs tracks going out. If more go in than come out then you probably have a buried person.

That's why I prefer ice fishing. An 8 inch hole with an Otter sled next to it=good. A 3 foot hole with an Otter sled next to it=bad.
