The four things I don't seem to ever have enough of are knives, multitools, flashlights and firearms. I will thank you to not bring up my mental health status with regard to these items. I have no affiliation with any brand mentioned here other than as a customer.

Here are some of my favorite multitools, and what I like about them.

In the keyring category, it's the Leatherman PS4. It's surprising to me how well the small tools on it work, in particular the knife blade is extremely good for a multitool of this size and price. While I almost always have a full-size multitool nearby, I can keep this one with me all the time. And some tasks really do call for two pairs of pliers.

For a full-size multitool I carry a Leatherman Wave in my laptop bag. When I was a consultant I used this constantly in customer datacenters; I don't use it nearly as often now but I can't imagine doing without it. This is a pre-2004 Wave -- I like the profile of the pliers better for IT work, I don't need the larger knife blades (because I carry a locking folder), and I don't need the flexibility of the bit driver, since I carry a screwdriver with an assortment of bits.

For Extra Large sized, I go back and forth between the Leatherman Surge and Super Tool 300 (do you sense a pattern emerging?). The ST300 goes with me on CERT callouts, as I figure I'm more likely to get it wet and dirty and less likely to need a bit driver. The Surge is tougher to clean but it's more flexible as to what it can do.

What are your favorites?

LM Squirt E4 in the keyring class -- the wire strippers are real. The ES4 replaced the E4 with added scissors.

LM Charge TTi -- I haven't used the S30V knife blade (I always have a locking folder too), but it's nice to know there's a back-up.

Super Tool 300 -- total brute, way overbuilt and I like it that way.

I have the PS4 on my keyring. It is gratifyingly useful and versatile. I generally also carry a Wave (not quite EDC) in a holster with a bit kit and a 4" crescent wrench. This rig saves steps and time for casual jobs; if a lot of wrenching needs to be done,I will hunt down a real tool.

Knives, flashlights, multitools, and firearms - what about ice cream and chocolate?

My doctor doesn't yell at me about the first four. Probably because I don't eat them laugh.

At the risk of starting an argument, I hold with the crowd that classifies a SAK as a multitool.

My EDC is a green Vic Classic. When I'm not at work, I always have a pre-2004 Wave on my belt. I own a post-2004 Wave, but I like the slimmer original version better ... (could say the same about myself grin).

I am experimenting with a storm grey Leatherman Juice S2 that I bought used. No saw, but a big scissors, decent small blade, and a good pliers. Probably good for around town.

When in the woods, I usually replace the Wave with a Vic Huntsman in a Zermatt sheath with sharpener. I always have a large knife in my pack too.

I have a "big tent" philosophy when it comes to these issues. SAK-bearers are welcome here grin.

Although Leatherman and Victorinox multitools are available in our (Middle Eastern) market, the whole MT thing is not very popular. Mostly REAL tools are used around from workshops to hobbists (sp?). But MT's can be found in some areas , and in some local on-line camping stores.

The result is illiteracy of which model is which. But thanks to Leathermna for writing/engraving the model names on their tools. So few weeks ago, I was in a store to buy a watch and they had the Rebar, the Surge, and Wave, in addition to some SAKs. It was one of the few stores that carries original multitools.

Generally, other stores carry chinese made MT's and that is why most of my collection is from there. And that is why I do not know any model names. So I will talk about features.

Most MT's I noticed (American or chinese), you cannot access the tools except by opening the pliers. I do prefer the other way round where you can access the tools with pliers closed. It's not because I am lazy LOL , but because using the pliers is more comfortable as your hands squeeze against a flat suface not on those tools.

The wave has flat bit drivers. To begin with I prefer simpler MT's with no bits. And this is why one of my 2 favorite (no-name) MT's came with normal bits but I threw the bits in the tool box. You would suggest that the bit driver, then, will become dead weight. Nope. It is designed cleverly using the philips driver itself. It is made of a SQUARE bar , not the usual round one. So, after removing the bits it is still useful as a philips driver.

Talking of the smaller MT's
I have a few. Off course they are slightly different from Leathermans. Mostly they have flat screwdiver/bottle opener + philips driver + straight blade + serrated blde. On the other side, they have a flashlight. Nice thing about it is you can use the MT itself as a base for this little light while you are doing something. However, because the light is so small on these little MT's I did'nt bother search for batteries when they died. Instead, I scavenged tools from one and added to the other. So , now I have one MT with TWO sets of tools, and other MT has no tools other than pliers , and it sits in my watch/jewelry tool kit.

Sorry Chaos.
I can spend whole day talking about MT's
Have to stop here.

Chocolate is a part of my EDC. Extra dark is how I like it. I seem to happen upon emergencies that require chocolate quite frequently, and so it's perhaps the single most useful addition.

Ice cream would be a bit tough to EDC, but it looks like there is a freeze dried version.

What sort of holster should we use for these two important items.

I'm thinking a soft insulated cooler attached with PALS webbing to your backpack.

I'm with you on the original Wave. My original has went back to my EDC and my new wave is in a toolkit. The original was just more useful day to day. I think Leatherman would make some sales if they would start making it again as a "Wave Classic" or something.

I hope Tim Leatherman reads this because you're quite right.

The only part of the new Wave that is unequivocally better in my mind is the locking function for the inside bits. I remember reading that they went with the larger (and for me, less useful) profile for the pliers because people were sending in Waves with broken jaws, so they felt it necessary to add more metal. It's not clear to me that the broader knife blades are entirely necessary. I'm on the fence for the bit driver, I like having the flexibility but I also like the original screwdriver bits for their ability to get at recessed screws.

SwissTool from Victorinox for full size.
Modified MiniChamp if I need to go smaller.

I'll stand up for Wave 2.0, especially for the feature that all tools lock, but either version is a very fine tool. For recessed fasteners, be sure and carry the bit extender. It will ride nicely in the tool pouch.

Most of the time I stick with my good old Leatherman Wave, which I bought sometime around 2004. It's a pretty good all-around multitool, with all the limitations of a pocket do-it-all gizmo. I also ordered the bit kit, which makes the Wave that much more useful for fixing stuff.

For small-scale work I also use a Leatherman Squirt. It's surprisingly handy when it comes to fixing electronic gadgets. Very compact but good quality.

In all honesty, I don't use my multitools nearly as much as an EDC pocket knife (Spyderco Endura for the most part) or even a SAK. In the field, what I need most of the time is a good blade. No multitool can rival a fixed blade or quality folder in that regard. But for basic repair of anything mechanical or electronic a quality multitool is very useful in a pinch.

My biggest issue with the new wave is the bit(s). I can't carry a belt pouch so I just carry the wave in my pocket so I can't carry a bunch of extra bits.
Plus the scissors and file are better on my old wave. They need something that combines the best of both.

L-tools seem to be gaining weight and bulk over the years. I still have an original PST and I would love to see that resurrected, with a locking blade as the only "improvement."

Perhaps a modular model where the user could switch out implements to match conditions would be worthwhile.

I guess my overall favorite is my Leatherman Flair. It has enough tools to handle most jobs while being fairly slim and light.

MTs are a bit of an obsession for me. I collect rather than simply use, so I have a lot to choose from.

My brand of choice is Leatherman, although I have some Gerbers and SOGs. I want to add some Vic MTs, but haven't gotten around to justifying the cost as they are both nice and expensive.

To the point; I carry a Charge TTi as EDC, as it provides a nice assortment of tools for mechanical and outdoor use and the nicer materials make it worth the expense for me. This wins out over the 6 other Charges and two Waves I have. laugh

I used to carry a Benchmade mini-Griptilian folder, but have since gone to a Vic Tinker so the Charge blade sees a bit more use now as it's my only OHO blade.

I've considered switching up MTs any number of times for something smaller, but the thing that always brings me back to the Charge is that its belt sheath also has a space for a Fenix E01, which I cannot do without. blush

For myself, I love everything about the Charge TTi except for the cap crimper -- I don't need one for anything, and I've held back on buying the TTi because I'm afraid that the cap crimper will have an impact on the utility of the pliers. Since you EDC it, I'd be very interested in your opinion on that.

I wouldn't say I stress my pliers, but I don't hold back on them; so strength has not been a problem. I do a fair amount of work with the needlenose; there is enough surface to use. While I'm not crimping any caps, I have occasionally found them semi-useful and not a hindrance. That portion of the plier jaws is good for holding a nail in place for hammering or holding the bail on a pot handle when camp cooking.

I also have a Charge Ti that does not have this feature, thinking maybe I'd like it better. I have found that the cap crimper doesn't bug me much, and the S30V holds an edge a bit longer than the 154CM steel on the Ti, so I've stuck with the TTi.

My EDC is a LM Juice XE6. I add a SAK eyeglass screwdriver to the corkscrew. When unfamiliar folks ask me what it is, I tell them it's the 21st Century Swiss Army Knife. I just returned it to LM due to rusting.

They were great. I had a new model XE6 sent back to me in less than a week. That's fine customer service. I've complained about LM 's response to my inquiry for a lefty Wave. But they got it right this time. The new XE6 seems to have various upgrades in tool strength & design, as well as fit & finish.

My EDC/ GHB usually has a LM Blast. I've found it to be LE acceptable even in very restrictive jurisdictions. Why is it LM discontinued such a sweet tool? Their new Rebar is nice, but no scissors. In my mostly urban use, the scissor is often employed.

My woods kit has a Wave, as does my small tool kit
