I was somewhat amazed at the crack in the ground that was following the train. Only cracked right under the train tracks, and as soon as it caught the train the crack stopped. Musta been mad at the train or something...

My wife just had to watch the second episode. Even thinking of trying to evacuate southern CA (not to mention Central, Coastal, etc) is a joke. Impossible to do, but if it could be done, why stop in Barstow of all places? Sure, the Marines probably have a jillion tents stored there, but did you see even one porta potty in the tent city they set up??? I could to on, but why. I won't be watching the re-runs...

Sorry for the late reply - just got done with the tapes. Assuming the evac was a success, didn't the "solution" seem counterintuitive? I always thought that an earthquake was the release of built up pressure along a fault. Fusing the fault to prevent that release strikes me as akin to corking the relief valve on a steam loop - you just get a much more catastrophic release later on. I might be wrong though, I'm no geologist.

Besides that, the cannister was HUGE (in the film). If you have seen pictures of ICBM warheads, they are about as large - with the physics package only 1/3 of this.

Typical "formula" disaster film. "Expert" that nobody believes, bureaucrats that don't want a panic, "expert" turns out to be right, kid lost but rescued at last minute. Just plug in the disaster scenario and the characters. Kind of makes you wonder what ever happened to creativity or maybe every plot has already been used at least once. <img src="images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
