Sounds like it mostly hit office buildings. Yet another example of why a flashlight should be part of an office worker's EDC and kept on their person at all times.

Does cell phone coverage automatically go out during a large city blackout, or only during the initial I've got to call someone right now and I can't get a signal type deal?
As far as I know cell towers all have backup power. After the initial overload of calls passes (texts will not normally have this problem) you should be good for at least several hours if not a few days before the cell towers run out of backup juice.
