Kodiak has awesome deer hunting. And lots of big bears which results in maulings every now and then. A significant percentage of the maulings on Kodiak seem to be deer hunters in exactly the situation these guys were in. You kill a deer and are field dressing or packing it out (as these guys were). The bear smells the gut pile and you and the bear meet.

Kodiak also has difficult terrain and a very cold wet windy climate in November. I have hunted there on several occaisions, all of which have been memorable, for one reason or another.

Glad to hear he survived and he was lucky he had a quick thinking friend with him to shoot that sow or he would have fed the bears.
