Does anyone have an opinion (quasi-expert) on Emergen-C From Alacer Corp as a rehydration option/solution or hydrator.

I am wondering what is a good rehydration mix.

Emergen-C is an excellent re-hydrator. My daughter works in a health food store, and tells me that many of their customers buy it mostly for its re-hydration/balancing qualities. One customer, who must wear a HazMat protective suit as part of his job, uses it as a restorative, and Emergen-C is a strict part of his routine. It is electrolyte balanced, each packet contains 200 mg of potassium (6% daily value) and you can safely take two packets at a time.

There are 32 minerals and vitamins, including 1000 mg of vitamin C (1111% daily value). I'm not sure about the benefits of such massive doses of vitamin C, but we all swear that it can pretty much also stop an oncoming cold in its tracks.

BTW, it is also very pleasant tasting. It comes in several flavors and is slightly carbonated. It comes in packets that you would add to water or juice, and it's easy to carry with you. Health food stores, drug stores and even some grocery stores routinely carry it.

Vitamin C in excess will do nothing preventive because the excessive amount will be expeled. Body doesn't store it.

Sucks.

Matt:

Do you have any knowledge of vitamin B1?

I have heard that if you take excess amounts, it evaporates through the pores of your skin and really keeps misqiutoes away?

When I did a lot of hunting, I tried it, but could never really tell if it was working as flies, gnats, and bees were always a bigger problem.

B1 in large doses changes person body odor. There is no consistent proof that this odor is unpleasant to lil bugs. Since like Vitamin C excess of this vitamin is expelled in urine there is no worry of possibility of overdose.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) is also used in emrgency field. In case of diabetic coma we give people dextrose (form of glucose)followed up by vitamin b1 shot that helps to obtain energy from glucose (enzyme in carbohydrate metabolism).

I can't comment on the re hydration aspect, but I can tell you a little about the bugs. I spent 2 years in Panama in the infantry. We spent a lot of time in the jungle and we tested Vit B Complex to see if it help with the bugs. We found that taking enough to change the color of your urine to yellow or orange helped a great deal.We ended up starting to take the B complex a day or two before we into the jungle and combined it with repellant on our uniforms. We could watch mosquitos land on a sweaty arm and take off without biting.
The B complex worked for about 80% of those who tried it.
We also found that some commercial repellants tended to attract bugs to a few people..This wasn't a scientific study, but we all felt that the results were valid and we continued to use B complex. Don't try to dissolve the B complex in water and drink it, it tastes really bad.
