About an hour ago, I felt a very obvious, sharp jolt, then stillness. Going to the USGS website a few minutes later, I learned that it was a Richter 2.5, 2km north of my community. While on the site, I filled out a DYFI form, an interesting process.

I immediately got a response, stating that my location (street address) was at the epicenter! At least I have a reliable experience to compare with the next one.....

Incidentally, no discernible effects at all - nothing fell, nothing broke. Maybe I will have a more exciting report the next time.

Hopefully not. When it comes to earthquakes, boring is good!

There are suggestions that hikermor is at the epicentre of a fair bit of mischief. Coincidence, this? Hmmm ...

OK, just be careful for what you wish.

Thanks - that's good advice! But earthquakes are interesting. Unlike hurricanes and tornadoes, there is no robust forecasting and no "earthquake season" so you need to be aware just about all the time. A round is in the chamber, and the safety is off...., so to speak

If earthquakes are part of your threat profile, you need to be ready almost constantly and develop good habits, like always topping off the gas tank when it gets half full.

hikermor - the same exact thing happened at my house 3 days ago. very sharp jolt - then all done. Magnitude 2.6. My home was very close to the epicenter of that one too. Los Angeles.

it will be a whole different story if it's a mag 5.0 or 6.0 and either one of us is at the epicenter.

I was too close for comfort in an 8.2 in 1968, in Okinawa. That's something you never forget.
