That's a hard question... Personally, I like to test all my gear under controlled conditions... because I bring all of the gear to it's limits... Most of that can (if not SHOULD) be done without even leaving home.
For examply, I test flashlights and batteries on how long they last, I test knives for their toughness, edge retention, I test cord, wire, straps, packs... you name it... All of that is separate testing, and a lot of the tested gear ends-up in the trash, broken, torn apart, tortured... Once I've really seen how much it can endure, I know if it's tough enough or not, period.
Testing a PSK in real life conditions, IMO, is not really useful. Worse, many components of your kit won't be tested to their limits because you'll actually need them for your stay.
