Erbswurst is a compressed pea food that was used as emergency rations by the German Army. In the early 1900's wilderness travelers carried it.

Here is a link to the history:

http://17thdivision.tripod.com/rationsoftheageofempire/id2.html

They sell some reproduction rations with apparently Erbswurst coming.....

with some quick searching I think Erbswurst may still be sold in Germany, though I cannot tell if it is still a compressed "sausage" of soup or powder. Unfortunately my translation abilities are not good enough. But I found several places with this search.

KNORR Erbswurst grün und gelb

Realistically though the powdered green pea or lentil soups sold in the grocery seems to be the same, just uncompressed. I like a thick cup of lentil soup especially at a winter lunch.

I think that the grun und geld is green and gold, maybe refering to the type of peas used. I searched thru a couple of on line suppliers of German food and came up empty. www.germandeli.com does have a good site for those of us that like that type of food. I do want some, should anyone ever find a supplier.

Knorr is still selling Erbswurst in Germany, although I have never seen it here. Erbswurst (Erbse = pea, Wurst = sausage) grün (green) is with bacon, so Erbswurst gelb (yellow) is probably without meat. It's still compressed and has the same shape:
