It seems really strange to me that at one point in the article, they say suction devices remove virtually no venom, then include using one in their list of recommendations.

Also, while laying a person flat seems fine, elevating the feet has no demonstrated benefit for shock (http://cjem-online.ca/v6/n1/p48).

It also fails to address one question, which is whether it is better to get the victim to treatment, or keep them in place. The advice I've heard in other places is that it's best to carry the victim out, but if that isn't an option they should walk out slowly and calmly.

Maybe they refer to a different more modern device. Even if it does not remove any venom it may help as the victim gets the impression that something useful is done and stays calmer. Psychology is a very powerful instrument in first aid.
