first off a shot of the PLB i picked out after reading reviews from ETS and some other web sites.

a good standard ResQLink with the 406MHz GPS.
i had no real need to message home or have that SPOT tracking system.my Wife is used to me going off for a few weeks and she knows the rivers and lakes as well as i do.
this is not the one that floats but it's going into my PFD inside a WP box i carried a small digital camera in,and yes secured to the PFD on a short line.
at 68 and with a new knee replacement i thought i would stop playing the "what can happen" game and invest in a bit of real survival gear.
next project is to take my canoe trip gear and canoe down to a local park where is do volunteer work for the National Park System.this is by the Mississippi River.
i'll set up camp and make Youtube for the SAR team that may have to come out and find me.a short talk letting them know i would not call for help unless it was the real thing would be followed by a show and tell of my tent, baker shelter, canoe and of course me and the clothes i wear out on the canoe path.i assume that would give them a better idea of what to look for as they home in on me.
i also plan on having the PLB with me on the portages which can be very tricky at times.i just hope if i go down and bust something that the path is not too hemmed in by trees.
so anyway thats it,when i make the "come and get me" Youtube i'll post a link here.

Google is your friend...
ACR ResQLink PLB. Under specifications is a statement regarding the battery.
Quote:
Battery, Replacement Interval: Replacement due six (6) years from date of manufacture or five (5) years after beacon is placed into service, whichever is first, or after emergency use

As for price, it probably varies depending on where you look. landfall navigation is one example. As I recall that may be where mine came from, not sure.

as for price i saved $100 by using my REI yearly refund and a gift card from my health insurance company for taking part in a "stay healthy" program.

Nice! I need to pick one of those things up myself.

Good pick. I carry the same unit, tethered with a piece of Type I dummy cord.

I always like to my PLB with me in remote areas, I do use a SPOT, but in a pinch it is nice to have a working PLB. I know mine has a 5 year span until the battery is done.
