I know I'm necroing an older thread, but I just purchased my first smart phone, and info-sec is very much on my mind. There's the usual free anti-virus software but a couple of pay security suites have extras that are attractive(remotely locate, set off alarms, take pictures, lock, and wipe the phone) in case the phone walks off on it's own.

You're thoughts on these security suites with extras for smart phones?

I would throw a hissy fit as well Izzy. If I lose my phone that's my stupidity for lack of personal security and awareness. And good luck to anyone trying to get into it if I do lose it.

I have an android, and I use Avast's mobile security suite.

It has all these, locate, disable, wipe.. it sends me an email with the GPS coordinates of the phone if the battery hits 10% - kind of a signal flare so to speak.

I have used avast on Desktop PC's for years - they make good stuff, and it doesn't bog the phone down. Also very customizable.

I don't know as much about android as I do about Apple, but here are the basics:

  • Keep the operating system up to date
  • Remove unused apps
  • Never grant permission to an app for anything it does not need, and periodically review the permissions your apps have
  • Some malicious apps make it through Google (or Apple's) screening process, you're a bit less likely to have an issue with a well-known publisher or an app with a large number of positive reviews
  • Back your device up religiously

LG Optimus Fuel (Net 10 entry level smart phone) running Android 4.4 (KitKat).

AVG AntiVirus PRO app.
I've found the locate feature to be very finicky, but everything else I tested works fine. I obviously did not test the remote wipe feature

I'm looking for another app that will just text me Lat/Long or UTM coordinates without requiring me to leave all the data services on.

I'd like to add to check what permissions an app requires before you download it (Android). As an example, the stock flashlight app retrieves data about your app usage history and control the camera. Some of the freeware stuff records everything down to your shoe size.

AVG is very highly rated. Take a look at http://www.av-test.org/en/?avtest[type]=9&avtest[platforms]=9-8-6&avtest[series]=9-8-6:1398902400.1,10-7:1396310400.2,5-4-1:1391252400.2,2:1291201200.3,3:1380628800.2/ for a survey of the reviews.
