I have never seen the sense of lashing things on the outside of one's BOB. How much of that expensive, possibly vital gear will one lose if they have to run? Or are forced into a mass evac vehicle such as a bus, plane or train?

I'd want that guy in my zombie apocalypse group.

Unfortunately rather too much mall ninja/Rambo stuff predicated on "societal collapse," whatever that might be. I note that he will be using this pack for SAR in the Phoenix area, so rather massive revisions will be in order. My SAR packs, developed and evolved for SAR centered around Tucson, were a pretty good start on what we are calling a BOB these days. Rather frequently I would grab my pack, respond to a situation, and be living off the content of the pack for 18-48hours. I was continually tweaking the pack, responding to weather and varying conditions. I would do the same with any BOB about which I wanted to be the least bit serious.

Strapping items to the pack is actually rather ingenious. Remember Hansel and Gretel and the breadcrumbs? As he treks through the desert, the spiny vegetation will comb through the items and make life easy for searchers as they endeavor to reach him. I hope the handcuff key is large enough to be readily observable.....

LOL.... That was kind of my reaction too.

You've got to admit though, the "Two prophylactics. You never know" was a nice touch. Best to be prepared for any and all eventualities, even low probability ones. smile

Sure, but as a BOB it's a bit ... unwieldy.

Seriously, a whole ROLL of duct tape?

A shoulder based kit? That'll last about 20 minutes.

Arizona and only 96 oz of water? Worst case scenario, he's out of water in 24 hours. And with all that extra weight, he'll want more water. Or he'll be shedding items trying to lighten his load.

Too much BS "comfort items." You're bugging out, which by definition entails short term survival. Luxury items are for when you've established a base of operations.

I find it somewhat ironic that he's bugging out, yet has items designed to be found (ie, 2 mirrors and compass).

Interesting choice of FAK items. No problem with the antifungals, but AZ isn't known for it's prime mold/yeast/fungus problems. And again, you're real unlikely to need it in a short bug out scenario. Maybe if you were backpacking 2 weeks in the Andes .....

Lots of redundancy. Tons of dental floss, flashlights, exacto knife vs pocket knife vs neck knife vs hacksaw blades galore.

really, if someone is going to post up their BOB's, I wish they'd at least try and explain what they're planning for, so their kits aren't just floating around without context. His kit might be perfect if he's making a run for Colorado or something, but seem pretty silly in an urban evac.

I've recently added one of these to my BOB.

I have also found these rations and they are lightweight and very tasty.

Most of the BOBs described always seem to be light on food requirements. For 3 days or 72hrs folks should be looking at 9000 Kcal. i.e. around 2 Kg or 4.5lbs weight of food.

Yes. Two thoughts on a BOB:

1. You have to be able to carry it

2. one assumes that you will leave behind items you won't need.

3. its very person/ training/location/season/ condition specific. ( Mine for a chicago Winter is vastly different than a San Diego Summer, etc.)

How do these compare to Mountain House, or similar, US brands?

If you don't know, then perhaps a food swap is in order?
