One interesting note from a SAR post got me thinking -- They suggest that when prepping for a night/evening search that you also remember that you may be in the field the next day - so bring a cool tee and your sunglasses, too.

I've learned that when you are packing, you pack for the local and current conditions; if its dry at home, you often forget your rain gear; if its raining at home you might forget sunscreen and shorts.

This is why I like packing lists.

Already part of my gear, Teacher. I have warm weather pack and a cool weather pack. Each one is set up for bad conditions and extended stays, and I can add to them as I get ready to leave. My lists drive my better half mad, but we rarely forget anything.

...I like that the gear is unpacked and checked by other team members; both to learn and to check for deficiencies.

I have a couple of check sheets to keep me on track before I head into the backcountry.

And here I thought I was the only one with this problem. Yet when she needs something, she never has to wonder if I'll have it. Although she'd never admit it, many times she's even said she's glad I'm so particular.

My better half would never admit to being wrong, or forgetful, but she has smiled and even sighed in relief when she finds something vital that she had forgot but I had packed for her.

So glad I am not the only one suffering from a "perfect" partner. LOL

About planning, a trunk bag is great because it includes multi-purpose stuff not limited to this one occasion. Keep it in the trunk at all times. It will help you supplement or replace anything you have in your mission-specific kit.
