We watched the show last night on TV. Overall, it was not a good review of the current state of SAR in Canada and I came away disappointed as I found the documentary lacked any real focus and seemed more of fluff reporting in my opinion.

The only good thing is they highlighted many times, is the work of the local North Shore SAR team which is about 25 miles west of us. This team is considered one of the most elite and also one of the busiest in Canada. The producers portrayed the SAR volunteers work very well but also depicted the toll it takes on families and relationships when their spouses are gone for hours and days out in the field.

That said, the show could been more in depth with other SAR teams across Canada who deserve just as much recognition. Especially since NS SAR is already a very high profile team, not only in the outdoor communities, but also with the general population and make the 6:00 pm newsreels frequently.

Tragic postscript to this. The SAR team that was highlighted in the documentary lost their leader last night. Tim Jones passed away on a local mountain despite herculean efforts by many to save him.

Tim was and is a legend in this area and through his long years of leadership and devotion, NSR is recognized as one of the premier SAR teams in Canada and the US. I have always said, that if I ever got lost or hurt out in the mountains, it would be a privilege to be rescued by NSR...

For the hiking and outdoor community and also the general public where Tim Jones served as a Advanced Life Support Paramedic (EMT), there are not enough words nor superlatives to express the impact he made in people's lives.

Although I did not know Tim personally, I had the opportunity to casually talk with him a few times throughout the years and once lent him a pair of gloves at one of the local hills as he had forgot his at home. He took the gloves with much appreciation and implored me to never let his wife know that he went out unprepared!

I agree. It's sad to lose such a fine person but at least he went in the best way possible (save maybe having it happen when you're 100!).

Too soon gone. Too soon. Our nation has lost a good man.
