The iPhone FLIR apparently has a secondary VGA camera (640x480 pixel) to take a standard visible video so as to provide an edge detection video stream, which is then mixed with the very low resolution interpolated Long Wave IR video stream to allow better interpretation of the heat picture, which would appear as in-distinguishable heat colour blobs due to the very low FLIR resolution.
What would be better would be to include a Sony ICX-405AL Monochrome CCD chip (656 x 494 pixels) for a few bucks more, which would perform the same function as the VGA camera for edge detection and also allow an active IR night vision with a IR emmiter LED to give the device another mode for night vision applications.
