www.equipped.org/warning.htm Home brewed linethrowing guns and all of our other projects are fun to experiment with. Please remember that people read these posts and may be inspired to cobble together some Rube Goldberg copy and do personal harm. May I suggest another idea? Many of our emergency services lack funds for many tools. Perhaps a local effort to raise funds for, ie a dedicated linethrowing gun for the folks that might be called to a lake or river emergency would be in order.

Chris, I have to agree. This just sounds like a Darwin Award waiting to happen, no offense to any of the forum members.

Chris, feel free to remove the thread.
It was something I read about and wanted to get some input on, which I did.
I believe it was in keeping with the spirit of around the campfire, but I understand your point.
I am not offended in any way.

I would like to second Chris’s idea. Our team as well dozens of others in each state and I am sure in most countries around the world are in need of new and replacement equipment. While I am well aware that many in the general community see much of these equipment as “boys with their toys” attitude, I can assure you most men and women in emergency services are aware of the need to be budget conscious. Many Fire/Rescue companies, both volunteer and career have been creative in making some of their own gear or buying their own personal gear. Many companies are faced with having to buy new gear every few years to maintain compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) and National Fire Protection Act (NFPA) requirements, which have both criminal and civil penalties for failure to provide approved personal protective equipment (PPE). To outfit one firefighter it can cost upwards of $1,200 to 1,500 for one set of turnout gear and breathing apparatus. Teams such as ours, which in addition to being firefighters, also handle specialty rescues such as technical/mountain/high angle, swiftwater, trench, confined space and collapse, must have the appropriate equipment to complete the task. The equipment and PPE can run into the millions of dollars. And while it is true we receive tax dollars to buy and support some of the equipment, we also need to raise money through BINGO, breakfasts and dinners.

If you feel you need to have some type of personal throwing line, you can buy throw bags with line for $15-45, depending upon your needs. Learn how to use the throw bags and you may save a life. Pete

Just head on down to your local volunteer Fire/Rescue Company and let them know you would like to make a donation to their equipment fund. If you live in an area with career personal, they may have a special fund for purchasing high dollar items like thermo-imagers or they may have a benevolent fund for the families of fallen or injured firefighters/EMS providers. In some countries, the local Red Cross/Crescent/Star of David or Civil Defense may be the appropriate agency. If you cannot donate funds, support their fund raising activities; you’re more than likely to have an evening of fun and/or a really great meal. If money is tight and making a contribution is not possible, a personal thank you is always appreciated. Also, please do not forget law enforcement, there are sometimes special funds to purchase ballistic vests for officers both human and canine. Pete
