While I am not a huge fan of such things in general, this one has enough stuff in it of the right kind that it seems more useful to me than the typical such pocket kits. http://www.alloutdoor.com/2013/11/04/henry-arms-survival-kit/

Seems to me I looked at this one when they introduced it a a couple years ago and it was really $$$. I can't search for a price at the moment through the work filter.

Henry Repeating Survival Kit The Henry Arms website says $99.95 -- nice can if you have huge pockets, but not for me.

Good find Bob, you are quite right to like that kit. The reason the kit is worth a darn is because (from the article) "... It is made by Best Glide ASE for many government agencies law enforcement and military." The folks at Best Glide are top notch and don't sell junk. No affiliation, just a satisfied customer. I'm a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to PSKs and I have obtained a number of good components from Best Glide.

Thanks for the link, it's a bit less pricey from Best Glide. There's other good stuff there too.

A little spendy but a good looking kit; only stuff you need, no junk and no fluff. I prefer to build my own but that one looks pretty usable.

I'd prefer it in a waist pack; with a better knife. one thing that is often missing here can't be included in a commercial kit - spare glasses and prescription meds. Light sticks have limited lifetimes and hard to know if they are already spent.

I picked up a bunch of Mountainsmith Vibe II packs a while back from Woot.com with the idea of putting together some small survival kits.

I'm glad to say that nothing in there surprised me. I am a fan of pocket kits. I often find myself without a larger kit in everyday life, whereas I could bring a pocket kit more places as a habit.
I'll be modifying my pocket kits, and this kit gave me some good ideas. The good thing about hanging around this site is that I'm confident enough to take this kit and make modifications to fit my own needs and preferences. By the way, I have that whistle (Acme 636 Slimline). It probably has the best loudness/size ratio of all whistles I own, and I own a lot of whistles.

Its Pricy, Not Really "Pocket Size", and Would Require a lot of Modifications to make it useful. Its always better to Create you own kit with the Critical Survival Items you really need in the area/conditions you are traveling in and place them in an appropriate container you will actually carry. This method is also much cheaper.

I enjoyed the advice to load up your AR-7 first thing. I have an AR-7, I like it a lot, but it has been irrelevant to any survival or near survival situation I have ever experienced.
Frankly, it is much better to develop your own personal survival routine and kits.

For what it's worth, I used to have one of those "SAS" kits that are tobacco tin sized. I gutted it and added my own contents and I was happy with it, but it ultimately reached about 1 lbs 6 oz. It was big enough that it really needed to either go on a belt pouch or a cargo pocket, but in the cargo pocket it flopped around and bounced against my leg which was uncomfortable in practice.
I know for sure I could fit an incredible amount of useful items into that henry tin but it would be so heavy and large that we're not realistically talking about a pocket kit anymore unless you're talking a field jacket.
It would be doable in a belt pouch maybe. But I wanted something low profile. I compromised. Initially my tin was designed for stand alone use, but in reality I would have my EDC in almost every feasible scenario so I decided to make it work as part of a system to supplement my EDC instead.
Purchased two gift card tins from Steak and Shake -- the same width and length as the SAS tin but the same thickness as an altoids tin. It's now thin enough to fit one in each back pocket comfortably and it spreads the weight. That also frees up my cargo pockets (blow out kit will fit nicely in one, and shelter stuff in the other. Bulkier than the original tin, but lighter and softer.

I figure its biggest drawback is that the container is no good for boiling water & "Not Recommended for Cooking"

While it may not be a pocket-sized solution, how about a pouch-sized one such as a mini bread tin? Look at this: http://www.amazon.com/Set-Mini-Loaf-Pans-Inch/dp/B002UF8YCY . Those could fit in a small MOLLE or similar pouch. There is a guy who built a "survival" kit out of one. Standard Disclaimer, YMMV, IMHO

The problem of using tiny tins to boil, is that it takes for ever to boil any good amount of water. This mean if boiling is the main method of making water safe to drink, it would take up far too much time, effort and energy to do so. So you either need to use a bigger container or a alternative (purification tablets and bags).

I, too, have pondered this problem. My solution, living in the arid West,is to always place a cup of the right size around my ever present canteen, which is almost always a Nalgene or one liter drink bottle- 700 ml capacity, takes up almost no space, weighs about 2 oz. It also protects the bottom of the bottle.
