I've been hoping somebody would run a large scale drill on the grid. As evidenced by 2011 September's power outage; no electricity means no cash, no gas, limited groceries, and imminent loss of water and natural gas utilities as well as cell networks.

Just watched American Blackout, yes I know disaster porn, but very entertaining but days 10 to 20 may have been pretty ghoulish so I guess they decided to unrealistically put the electricity back on at day 10. Oh and don't forget your manual can opener if your a New York Yuppie, I would recommend one of these; Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Lid LifterIf there was an Electrical Grid failure in the lead up to a harsh winter i.e. Mid November, the results could be even more severe.

It will take place Nov. 13th and 14th. if a genuine grid failure were to take place on this date, I wonder how long it would take for the GridEx II players to figure it was for real, not an exercise.

I wouldn't really worry about it too much as bringing down the US electrical Grid can also be carried out with a number of these. You can also disrupt national Railway networks with them as well, even the ones that don't run on electricity! All it takes is a little coordination, no EMPs, no specialist hacking knowledge of SCADA software etc. Cheap, reliable and effective and difficult to defend against.

An article on the drill, which ended today: Attack Ravages Power Grid. (Just a Test.) “It’s going really well,” said Gerry W. Cauley, the president and chief executive of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, which ran the drill. “A bit scary, but really well.” -----------------snip------------ The degree of simulation varied, organizers said. Nobody touched actual operating equipment, but some companies sent trucks with linemen aboard to investigate the status of key transformers because the “scenarios” written by Mr. Cauley’s group included computer viruses that kept technicians at the control centers from knowing the condition of crucial equipment. -----------------snip------- Drill participants said they would not talk about the specific locations of the simulated attacks, for two reasons: The locations were chosen at points that the insiders knew were vulnerable, and the companies involved were promised that if they participated, their performance would not be held up to public criticism. The purpose, organizers said, was to pose problems that were hard to solve, to expose areas that needed improvement. ----------------snip---------- One main component of the drill was a log of all communications to record who said what to whom, by email or phone, to determine whether the participants could promptly reach the appropriate people at power companies, police stations or distant cybersecurity centers, and whether they could convey the appropriate information. The information supplied by the game controllers included some “fog of war” confusion, Mr. Cauley said.
