OK. If connecting a random wire to the antenna connector continues to give the same symptom that suggests starting at the antenna connection and working inwards. You'll need a schematic and some knowlege to go from here.

As I said above, I found a blown bandswitching diode in my SW receiver that meant one range was dead. But a 'no signals' symptom could be many things.
