here is a link to a outfitting company in Ely Mn.
one of their canoe guides is going to try to bushwhack his way from Ely which is the town at the end of the road in Minnesota to Atikokan Ontario.Atikakan is the canoe tripping hub for that part of Canada like Ely is for Minnesota.
so this fellow is going to walk thru the forest and use a dry suit where he has to make water crossings.he has all the right gear knows the country.there are no real trails only portage paths between the lakes.on the Minnesota side there are a few trails but he will be no where near them and in Canada there are none in the park he will be hiking thru,Quetico Park.
i have done a lot of canoe tripping in "the Q" and it's all heavy pine forest, black spruce so thick you can't see thru.
cliffs,bogs--you name it.
some have said it's not that bad as rangers, surveyors and naturalists have made their way around but i don't think any have done it solo and made water crossings.

Check out my post here for a book that documents two stories of people forced into similar treks near that area. Very worthwhile (the book, that is...).

Glock..it was that book that gave me some heads up on what i would really need in my PFD ditch kit. first up was the foil bag and over sized foil blanket to make a shelter, and deet wipes, small so they fit,and a head net.
second was a way to make a fire that was fool proof.i used a "orange box" stove for that along with a 3oz gaz cart inside a small cooking pot.
some other odds and ends went into the pockets.the plan is to make a shelter and a BIG fire and wait for help via a PLB.
the PLB idea is from the good word they get on ETS.
