So, I am thinking about rearranging the kitchen. The problem is that I cannot figure out how the base cabinets are held in place. There are screws to the wall in the back, but I cannot determine how they are held to the floor. They are installed over tile. There no visible screw heads at the bottom of the cabinets on the outside. Any ideas? I would like to move them without using dynamite (sorry Blast).

In the UK we use gravity. Quite reliable and cheap.

I have not been around construction sites much; I don't remember cabinets being mounted to the floor, just the wall.

I've always liked how these guys explain things. I subscribe to their magazine ... one of my favorites:

I have removed the screws from the wall and the cabinets do not move. The two cabinets are not adjoining/attached other cabinets. It is a cabinet/stove/cabinet arrangement. I am mystified.

I plan on painting the cabinets and replacing the countertops.

Izzy - tile floor. I may just have to not move and join the two cabinets like I had planned. It would have made a 42-inch work surface. Instead, I will probably have to leave it a split arrangement - rats!

The ones in my old house were screwed to the floor and to each other in multiple random places, usually hidden by something else. That rubber trim strip along the front bottom covered a few screws and then others were done from the side with the next cabinet put down covering the head.

The tile floor was installed before the cabinets. It is wall-to-wall. That is what is mystifying. I pulled the stove out and look at the bottoms of both cabinets. The was no trim on them and no screw heads.

Glued to the wall perhaps?

I am not sure what the heck they did. I do not want to get into destruction mode (sorry Blast) to find out. There is no budget for remodel at that level; even though I wish there was. I will just paint them in-place and replace the countertops.
