My problem now is, how do I carry it? It's longer than any of my kit bags. I need a bag that's big enough to easily contain the prybar while still being small and convenient enough to grab on my way out the door. Suggestions, anyone?

I am not sure what your kit bags are like, but a 15 inch bar should be easily accommodated by the ice axe loops on any of several good climbing day packs. If I were going out the door with my gear I would rate a good back pack as a very useful bit of equipment anyway.

I keep a longer conventional crowbar secured to the tool loops of the 3500 cu in bag I stow under my bed. Nice and handy if I have to pry my way out of earthquake debris. Although I am usually not one to go around prying into others affairs, I'll bet my 30 inch steel bar can out lever your 15 incher. Sometimes, longer is better..

Hope neither of us has to use a prybar in earnest..

Backpacks for climbers are out of my budget range. I want something for no more than about $50, hopefully less. Also, I wouldn't want to display any gear in outside loops anyway. I don't want to show people what I have.

I was looking at military surplus tool bags, but they seem to be either about 10 inches long (too short) or 19 inches long (too big). I'm still looking for a happy medium of around 15 inches long (for the prybar).

My prybar philosophy is similar to my umbrella philosophy. If I have my umbrella with me, there's no way it's going to rain.

May you never need your prybar.

If $50 is your limit, there are two options: surplus and a good heavy sewing machine. Surplus is a minefield. I never buy anything unles it's listed new or excellent and stated as true issue( not "type", which is cantonese for mainland China junk).Even then you will want to inspect for worn or repaired straps etc. Access to a good shoe repair, saddlemaker or boating shop will enable you to sew heavy canvas or leather replacements or custom items. Surplus tends to be heavier. My rucksack features a steel frame and canvas worthy of a clipper ship. The dull colors are both boon and bane.Sometimes I want to be subdued while watching wildlife. Then I lay it down and it blends into the terrain. Strips of reflective or bright tape solved that. You also risk the smell of storage. A can of fabric spray cleaner, smudging with sage smoke and a good coating of scotch guard made mine socially acceptable.

Fifty bucks is more like my comfort limit. If I found what I want, I suspect I'd pay a good deal more.

Craig,

Check out http://www.duluthtrading.com. Good stuff. Remember that you can lay the bar diagonally, so a smaller bag might also work.

Well, other than being at least 16" on the diagonal, what kind of bag are you looking for? If you know where to look, you can sometimes find the medium ALICE pack for under 50, with straps (make sure you get ti WITH the straps).

BTW, there is a 17" tool back from the folks who make the BucketBoss, so Duluth should have it. Tough bag, I use it for the range, so I can testify that the seams are good.

To be honest, I'm not sure.

Something that won't make me look any more geeky than I usually do. Something I can carry without attracting attention. Something I can carry on weekends as well as to the office. A bag for all occassions, I suppose.

I'll know it when I see it. I've seen some promising items at www.magellans.com under daybags.
