i ran this a few years ago but the subject came up again so here's another look.
the Nature Center we volunteer at has a winter Trappers and Traders week.kids are bussed in from area schools to learn about Minnesota's role in the fur trade of the 1800's.
the highlight is a snow shoe trek over the trails to my camp where the staff does some demos of tent living in the winter and i lead a class on making fires with one match.
we have small bags of twigs and birch bark for them to use as we don't want the area picked clean.
i do the fire is your friend but it will bite back so be careful talk and do a demo of laying out and lighting with the one wood match i give them.most if not all light their fires.
this is in midwinter Minnesota!!
