Just wanted to post a quick heads up- today's Woot! deal is on Mountain House freeze dried food pouches. Standard disclaimer, I don't work for Woot.com, I just buy a lot of crap there! grin This is actually a pretty decent deal if you like MH stuff (I do). Shipping is just $5 for any amount. It works out to a couple bucks per package cheaper than I can find locally, even with shipping.

I cooked up a Mountain House 'Scrambled Eggs, ham and Potato' this morning at the end of St Andrews Harbor Wall and it was horrible. sick

I would get a taster pack before ordering any substantial quantities.

You picked the worst possible one to try! It's common knowledge that virtually every brand and type of long term storage egg dish is gonna be disgusting. Doesn't matter if you get MREs or freeze dried. Eggs are almost impossible to do right flavor wise.

I find the best tasting of the MH to be the Buffalo Chicken Wrap filling and the beef stew. The lasagne is okay, too. Again, most of them are decent for what they are. The comparison to make isn't MH vs. fresh food but rather MH vs. canned or other storage stuff. It's certainly a trade off; shelf life vs. quality.

MH beef stew is at least as good as the canned varieties I've tried. The buffalo chicken is good enough that I reverse engineered it to make it from scratch.

Freshly made food is better of course but for backpacking, vehicle storage, etc it's a decent option.

BTW, the deal runs til the 26th or so if anyone is interested.

Granted that FD eggs are typically a little "off," but is it anything that the right hot salsa can't fix? I come to the professional chef, seeking enlightenment....

I agree with that assessment of the MH Beef Stew, that and the FD peas go well together IMO (not being a professional). Don't overcook the peas.

I'll need to try the Buffalo Chicken Wrap.

Well, you can hide a multitude of sins with enough salsa! grin If that isn't enough there's always MRE cheeze wiz!
