The description for the diving wetsuit reads:

"The Cryptic Pattern makes it difficult for the shark to see the wearer in the water column by using disruptive coloration and shaping from the perspective of a predatory shark. The pattern is not only difficult for the shark to see but is also designed to blend in with the background colours."

But what about the BCD, fins, air tank, etc.? These things will cover up some of the torso. So even if the Cryptic Pattern will do its job, divers can't allow it to do its job.

The company's FAQ recognizes this problem. Its response? "At this stage maximum protection is afforded by maximum coverage. Further testing is being undertaken to be applied to other equipment besides wetsuits." So I guess that means this doesn't work well for divers.

Note the decal they market for the surfboard crowd. They could probably do something similar for scuba equipment. Regardless, looks like a good application of shark physiology research.

While shark attacks do occur, they are a fairly minor cause of mortality for scuba divers (far more important to be certain that there is enough air in the tank and that the regulator sucks properly). Surfers are more at risk than divers, since they spend more time on the surface. The only shark related fatality to a scuba diver was to a commercial fisherman at the surface on his scooter near San Miguel Island (AKA Shark Park); Cal F&G won't allow their divers in the water there.

Dspite the impression you get from Hollywood movies, shark sightings and encounters are not routine.
