I tend to agree, but with Garmin's newer high sensitivity receivers I have yet to lose signal, but I tend to avoid the high rise section of town. I was talking to a friend who works in the design of cell phones for one of the majors and she agreed that not allowing the GPS to function independently while in airplane mode is a bad design. But I'm sure there was an good idea behind that flaw.
Meantime, when I need a GPS I have a few dedicated GPS receivers to choose from depending on application. The cellphone is a tertiary back-up.
