Hello all!
I have been looking around for my ideal multitooled-pliers. As of now I have decided to go for the Leatherman Pulse, but the only thing It doesnt have is an awl. I have an idea of regrinding the middle screwdriver into an awl with a Dremel tool or similar. Has anyone done a similar thing to any other tool? What are the doīs and donīts?

Stefan, Sweden

I haven't done that extensive of a grinding job on any of my tools, but I have done some lesser grinding on several SAK's. First, a dremel might work, but if I had a bench grinder, I'd start with that. The main thing is to not overheat the tool. If you do that, you will change it's temper and therefore make it less hard. Go very slowly and allow the tool to cool off frequently. You can even dip the tool in water frequently to keep it cool.

The other thing to keep in mind is that if you grind off too much, there's no going back. Plan out your work ahead of time and proceed carefully. Best to leave too much material and have to go back later for a touch-up.

You may also want to look at several different awls to help you decide on the design. The SAK awls are good and you may want to emulate their edge and point configuration.
