I tend to pack the same stuff for short trips and long, near and far...I'll post my list later for critique.

My packing lists tend to follow seasonal conditions, and blur in the Spring and Fall when the weather is a pot pouri. Perishable things like fuel and food are adjusted every trip, but the rest is pretty standardized based on the season. (Water procurement is different here in the winter than in the summer, for example, as is clothing requirements.)

I think first in terms of packing/gear/supply categories (like water, shelter, fire, food, rescue, light, tools, first aid, hygiene, etc.) Once I define the need I let that drive the specific items I pack.

That's when my overpackingitis flares up. I'm very good, IMO, at making sure that I've covered all my primary requirements, but tend to overpack with multiple redundancies because, as my hubby observed last night, I love my gear. I hate choosing between it. Two favourite snuggly bush sweaters? Pack 'em both!

BTW, if it seems like I missed the "non wilderness" part, I didn't. I tend to think along the same lines regardless of when and where I'm traveling, although I bring more the further off-road I go.

I think we should not completely dismiss ( wilderness) even when we are going from city A to city B. We could get stuck or stranded in between by any freak twist of luck

All it takes is a detour or "shortcut" or mechanical failure of some sort, and you find your self in the wilderness , even when asphalt is a few feet away. Happened to me a few decades ago. Car failed in the middle of a sandstorm and NO ONE was there on the road. Seems most of the population was smarter than me. LOL

My differences are only about environment and weather, ie. winter or summer, tropic or desert. Even then it is more a matter of increasing quantities or adding insulation for cold weather.

Between cities and within cities -- Interstitial Wilderness.

Hmmm, bus schedules for why? In a non-survival event scenario I can work out a bus schedule as needed, no need to carry one. In a actual survival event scenario, any schedule previous to the event is OBE and therefore probably not worth carrying.

Don't know where you're going with appearance; are you looking to blend in or be noticed? About the only thing that changes for me is what's on my feet.

A good example of the differences - a wallet. Not very useful in the woods, but great to have in the city for ID cash, debit card, change, membership cards and so on.

The cash can be helpful as fire starter-Franklins and Jeffersons are reputed to burn the best.

More seriously, the contents of a wallet associated with a body is a helpful first step in identifying the remains.

I agree with Chisel regarding being stuck between City "A" and City "B".

I pack for my time in a city, in case some or all utilities fail during my stay, AND the "wilderness gear" needed in the event of an incident while enroute.
