If you can get away with cargo pants everywhere then the otter box is fine and the advantage of only having one thing to grab and stick in your pockets in the morning is good. I have generally been somewhat more bothered by the fashion police and cannot wear cargo pants to work. I get away with my vest most of the time but when I don't then I have my PSK in my pants pocket. I also find that it isn't too much of a bother for me to stick a few loose items in other pockets so the only things in my PSK are items that I don't need constant access to.
Constant access to your otter box means that there are many opportunities for it to be opened and spilled all over the ground thus losing important pieces of your gear.
Sticking the blades into your thigh is a true concern but I have found that folding them into a piece of cardboard will adequately protect them and me. Also you might try keeping them in the little plastic case that you often buy them in.
