Everyone works out a suitable technique eventually. I shave daily in the shower, using whatever shampoo or soap is handy - I think the hot water does most of the beard softening. I use a disposable razor for a month or slightly more. Using disposable razors, I shave for about a dollar a year. I tried out double edge razors eons ago.
