It's certainly a study in how resilient the human body can be.

He survived, just barely, but I would imagine that he may well suffer some permanent effects from this. You can't push the human body that far, even if you're 18, without damage.

There are hints that he had some personal problems. He was not that far from civilization, and rescuers speculate that may have been avoiding people walking on paths through the area.
