I use a variety because some have better maps a different scales and some need less bandwidth and can store maps on the device. The ones I use the most are Topo maps for rural areas and GPS Drive for urban areas. Google Earth and the maps function on the iphone also are helpful.

... and please clarify the operating system(s) that the apps are available for, if known (iPhone, Android, Win8, ...).
On a side note, just before Christmas I updated from a Motorola Droid 2 to a Motorola Droid Razr Maxx. The improved battery life on the new phone is amazing compared to the old one. That was becoming a real issue.
