The parang knife falls into the same category as machetes and kukris. These blades are also a fighting weapon and come from areas where wood, bamboo, tall grass or vine vegetation is utilised. If you plan on spending time in this envireonment one may be appropriate. You exressed interest in a hatchet. With a large blade, it would be superfluous. I am not familiar with the hatchet he mentions, and don't carry one normally. You may want to take a look at the Swedish Granfors Bruk company. They are truly superb. The inexpensive all steel ( no wooden handle) Estwing is another option. A small saw is safer for most applications.

Thanks , I agree, but I'm looking for somethingin the way of an inexpensive pocket chopper like the old Marble's hatchet and the hatchet that Mors mentions, if its as good as the Mora knives sounds ideal. My present chopper is a Beck Tracker horizontal mounted so it stays out of the way, but since their out of production and the knife is going to appear in a Hollywood movie this summer, I,m retireing it from everyday useand I haven't found anything to replace it yet.
