I have been searching for a tobacco tin as pictured on the website. I haven't been able to find one similar to Doug's anywhere. I was wondering if anyone out there actually knew where one could be had, short of actually purchasing a fully assembled kit that includes a container. Thanks for your input, it is always appreciated---keep up the great posts.

The British company BCB used to sell their containers seperately. A quick look at their website didn't show any listings. Try calling the U.S. distributor (see manufacturer list) @ the toll free #. The last time I found a tobacco tin, the retail price was rediculous because of the stuff inside. Find a local shop, and ask if they could scrounge a few.

In general the tobacco tin has been supperceded by the ubiquitous Altoids tin. On advantage the tobacco tin has is it is more water resistant. For a tobacco tin you can go to a tobacco shop and see what is available. In either case You buy the product. Use, give away or dispose of the contents. The tin is a free item.

BCB do still sell them seperately, I see loads over here. And you can buy Tabacco easily in such tins, as well as them seperately to hold baccy or anything else <img src="images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />. These usually come with weird pictures on them though.

Eaglescout has asked a question that I myself was just about to ask, but I don't think we've given very good answers. I've been searching the web for over a year for the BCB tins or their equivalent, and I cannot find any.

If you have a URL that leads to tins this size, please post it. Even the "head shop" tin sites don't have large tins. If BCB still sells their tins, they won't admit it to me.

Have you tried Singleton's Surplus in the UK ? I have bought several from them in the past. The second place to look would be SASS www.sass-kit.fsbusiness.co.uk Just checked the site and they do have them. Both these companies have other items of interest and I have been happy with their service. I had the SASS people build a survival vest for me and that was money well spent.

Eaglescout and all: I'm still on the case. I've found some new sites for stash tins that may be the correct size. Still checking it out. I've also got an email in to SASS.

While looking, I found this non-tin kit from BCB.

http://www.bcbin.com/store/cat_out_adv.asp?idproduct=127&idCategory=32

It's called the Survival System kit, if you can't use that URL. On another site it was described more fully, and seems to include shelter components.

I like the idea a pouch like this for a PSK, as it seems to make better use of the shape of the trouser pocket.

Well, SASS-KIT is out of the running. Here's their reply to my inquiry...

"Regretfully we have sold out of the empty survival tins. At present we are not able to get more and so I can`t quote you."

I have, however, placed an order at www.thegrooveshack.com. They have stash tins of comparable size to the BCB tins (within 1/8 inch on all dimensions).

Don't rush to the computer with your wallet until I get them, though. I'll let you know how they are and how they compare to the BCB tins when I have them in hand.

Thanks for your help in searching for the tins. Sorry about my previous post (The Holy Grail)---I didn't see the post that you had today (15th) about www.thegrooveshack.com. I hope the new tins will work out, I can' t wait to get a report back from you. The pictures adorning the tins (the Pope smoking marijuana, Jimi Hendrix, and other cannabis-related symbols) are especially amusing... I guess I will leave them on there, instead of trying to scrub them off with steel wool. After all, "positive mental attitude" is the first priority in survival. The pictures on the front of the tin warrant a few chuckles, if nothing else. Thanks again.

I agree with Chris--try a tobacconist (read: pipe & cigar shop here in America). It's been a while since I've been in one (don't smoke), but recall seeing a bunch of tins, some of which did not have tobacco in them.

Don't recall the prices. I guess a little field research is in order...:)

Eagle Scout and all: I received my order of stash tins from www.thegrooveshack.com today.

My order took a long time to arrive because one of the designs I'd chosen was out of stock. The Groove Shack customer service was very good, once I contacted them by e-mail. (Messages I left on their telephone answering machine were never answered.) They explained the situation and offered a substitute, but I chose to wait.

The design isn't very important in the end. Each of the three samples I received was a plain black box with an adhesive label on the lid. The label is easy to remove, leaving a plain box.

The tin dimensions are: 1 x 3-1/8 x 4-1/4 inches. This is exactly the same size as the BCB tins I have. The metal seems comparable in gage. The lid seal is a soft plastic gasket, well attached to the lid rim.

In short, I think this is a viable source for empty tins. You might want to contact them first to make sure your choice is in stock, or to specify that pattern doesn't matter.
