I was caught in a flash-flood about 14 years ago, and not being a good swimmer and not being prepared for the power of the water was one of the scariest experiences I have ever had. Fortunately, I was able to get to a mud bank and claw my way out of the "small" creek I had been asked to cross. I knew at that point it was time for me to get back into a desk job.
