Finally tried those instant Idaho potatoes. (No point in stocking them if nobody will eat them, so we had them with dinner tonight.) YUM! About $1.29 at Walmart. Just add 2 cups of boiling water. So good. We usually do instant rice when we're living out of our packs but these potatoes may knock that off it's pedestal. Already added a few packs to the family bob and one to vehicle bib/bob.

What else have y'all been holding out on me about?

IIPs are great and one of my staples. I will mix in various cheeses, etc. and throw in jerky or whatever. It winds up as a sort of ersatz shepherd's pie. If I could get my hands on some haggis I would try that....

If you find a potatos au gratin box with the sliced dried potatos in two packs, I like to add a small pack of salmon (the aluminum pouch type), a 1/3rd cup of dried milk, Seasoning and herbs to taste to one potato pack in about 2 cups of boiling water and cook till the potatos are tender.

mmmm... those sound like delicious recipes. Thanks guys! I look forward to trying them out.

We had them tonight with peas and turkey meatloaf. Shepard's pie is right, hikermor.'It would be delish with haggis! (There's a sentance I never thought I'd say. LOL!) YUM!

I am partial to the Mountain House meals. I like the chicken and rice and teriyaki chicken the most. If I am going to cook something for several people, I take a package of the chicken in the foil bag, a package of Knorr rice and some basic seasoning and follow the rice directions, pouring in the chicken and broth from the foil pack. Actually tasty and will feed 2 to 3 people, depending on appatites.

The sky is really the limit, you just have to look at things on the grocers shelf and think,"how can I use that on camp?" The possiblities can fit all tastes.

My all time favorite backpacking meal is to get filet mignon, cook it almost to the desired state, take it off the grill and freeze it in foil, placed in a ziplock. Take rice and vegtables that are quick to make. I wrap the steak in some clothing to keep it cool on the trail and the first night make a fire, let it burn to coals and put the steak on the coals to let it finish cooking, in the foil. Make the veggies and rice while that is going on and then have a nice feast.

If I am trying to impress someone, I will take a pint of red wine, chilled, placed in a thermos and a few plastic wine glasses. I get some weird, hungry looks from other hikers smile

A very Quick MRE found at the local supermarket, just reheat in a few minutes.

Tilda Lime & Coriander Steamed Basmati Rice (250g)

John West Tuna Fillet in Sweet Thai Red Chilli (142g)

Some other product lines I find useful

http://www.ainsley-harriott.com/products/

http://www.lookwhatwefound.co.uk/Page/ProductsByCategory.aspx?CatID=1

And for freeze dried

http://www.expeditionfoods.com/expedition-foods/freeze-dried/high-energy-serving.html

And if desperate the infamous Vesta Beef Curry

http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/#/asda-co..._rice_236g.html

1000Kcal in a 236 gram package

I recently tried one of these on a recent fishing trip. One of my fishing buddies was amazed, thinking that it dated from the 1970s not knowing that these were still available.

mmmmm..... I've never tried boiled eggs on the trail. Always worried about them going bad if I bring them with, and taking too long to cook if I make them on the fly. Might need to add this to me TO DO List. Thanks IL Bob!

suggestion ... pretty obvious but it works :-)

I always have a large chocolate chip cookie, or a couple of choc chip granola bars, stashed somewhere safe in my pack. These are my emergency foods for cheering up, or when I am out of time and just can't cook, or when I am getting hypothermic and need energy fast.

The world usually looks much better - after a chocolate chip cookie :-)

A new favourite is a Spud Bomb ! I started on these recently after reading about them on an Australian forum (BushCraftOz.com). (Thanks to BushChef)

Basically it consists of:

-Instant powdered potato and powdered eggs as the base

-Then extra flavourings and ingredients.

These are intended as a dry meal suitable for hiking and then just-add-water.

I mix about 3 spoons of the instant potato to one of powdered egg in a ziplock bag (you can do this at home).
Then add boiling water, stir and Presto !

To add some flavours you can add whatever you like eg:
- Jerky
- Salami
- Cabanossi
- Pork floss (you can buy this in bags from Asian grocers)
- Semi-dried tomatoes
- Pinenuts, peanuts or other crushed nuts
- Bacon chips
- Shredded cheese
- Crushed cheetos ('cheese and bacon balls' - makes an excellent seasoning and adds some salty goodness)
- Freeze dried peas, beans, corn etc

Then add herbs and spices. Be generous because there is nothing more boring and bland than favourless spud, especially after a long hike. Here are some suggestions:
- Bush tomato seasoning
- Paprika
- Chilli powder
- Thyme, basil or a standard dried herb blend
- Chicken or veggie stock powder (in small amounts - can be too salty if overdone)
- Garlic powder

-Instant soups also make a good flavour addition !

I've been looking everywhere (brick and mortar) for those, Teacher, and so far have only found them in MREs. (Around here the only thing similar I've laid my hands on are those little packs og pb/jam/honey they give at breakfast joints, but I'm worried about their packability/smashability. We just got a new Costco not far from here, maybe I'll have luck in there. (One of these days when I go to the big city, I'm going to hit the Mountain Equipment Co-op store, they're bound to have it.)

I just watched Canoedogs youtube video about his Chow Bag, and it looks like he uses generatic squeeze containers to carry peanut butter and jam. I am VERY curious about these. Any insights Canoedogs?

those plastic tubes are one of the best and cheap answers to food storage that have come along in awhile.i put just not the peanut butter and jam into them but also dry milk and sugar.
unscrewing a cap and shaking a bit of sugar into the AM coffee sure beats spooning it out of a jar.
tip..the bars that close up the end have a pointed tip in them to help the bar fit and slide to close the flap.i cover those with a bit of tape so they don't punch a hole in another Zip Lock.

I googled for single servings of peanut butter and found this british web shop:

http://www.sachetsandmore.com/product.php?ProductID=1181

So I made an order and now just wait and see.

Ordering within Europe there is no tax to be paid as it would be if ordering from USA.
Besides some food products are even prohibited for ordering to Europe.
Since I donīt know all the restrictions itīs safer if items are available on this side on the Big Pond.

For lunches I really like the small tins of flavoured tuna, like these Clover Leaf ones (I really like the spicy thai chili). I've paired these either with a bagel or some crackers (you can also buy the snack kits that come with crackers, but they aren't quite enough for an actual meal on their own when outdoors).

Whole grain goodness, better texture than rice or potatoes, just add hot water and allow to soak. Edible hot as pilaf, cold as tabbouleh, keeps a long time. Premixed in single portions with dried carrots, onions, peas in a ziplock is my preference, tho premix with brown sugar and cinnamon is a pleasing breakfast gruel.
