I really like Peter Kummerfeldt's view on survival. He's the real deal!
Too many people try to carry way too much gear. I suspect its to the point where their gear is so bulky and heavy that its unlikely to be with them when its really needed.
My interest in survival started when my family and I were at an event at our county fairgrounds and we met folks from a local search and rescue team. My kids were quite young at the time so I asked them what we should do to ensure their safety when out and about (the kids were in Cub Scouts & Girl Scouts and our family liked to camp). They told me that the kids should carry a large plastic bag for shelter and a loud whistle. That led me to help the Cub Scouts create small survival kits.
That's about the time I found equipped.org, which led to me building up my survival gear and skills.
A few years back I came across an article by Peter Kimmerfeldt in a Boys Life magazine that my son gets from the Boy Scouts. I liked his approach and found his web site. Since them I'd say I'm kind of a minimalist regarding survival gear. Getting Doug Ritter's Personal Survival Pak and following his advice on extras and SIMPLE shelter provide an AWESOME relatively minimal kit.
