I think the subject line is supposed to be "homemade mosquito repellent." "Homemade remedy for mosquito repellent" means the repellent is causing health problems for you, and you need to fix it with a homemade remedy...

Anyway, I'd be interested to learn whether this stuff works. In my experience, only that toxic, carcinogenic stuff has protected me from mosquitos with any success, and even then, some suicidal mosquitos still get through to take my blood.

no..the old camping books i have that go back to the late 1800's are full instructions on how to make bug repellents.anti bug advice included not washing and one writer said that after you got enough bug juice on you had a layer of "varnish" the bugs can't bite thru.
on our last camping trip my Wife was spraying her legs all the time with some sort of "no bad chemicals" repellent.note i said "all the time",one wipe over with those packs with the DEET in them and i was good all day.DEET can be nasty stuff and i make a point of washing up before bed time.

Not sure about the mosquitoes. I think it would probably make a decent fire starter undiluted. You might want to avoid open flames and sparks if you use it.

from "nessmuk's" book Woodcraft published in 1920 he gives his favorite bug repellent that he in turn found in a 1883 "forest and stream" magazine.
3 Oz of pine tar
2 Oz castor oil
1 Oz pennyroyal oil
simmer over a low fire and bottle up.he said one ounce of this lasted all summer.he also said he never washed on a seven week camping trip.
other remedy's i found in "the way of the woods" by Edward Breck from 1908 added creosote, camphor, citronella and something called carbolated vaseline. it's noted that the tar can be omitted for the lady's use.

Garlic that seeps through your pores works fairly well at keeping away both mosquitoes and your companions. I like Szechuan cuisine (a lot) and a hot spicey meal in the evening has worked well the next morning! smile

@Canoedogs: Love the recipes. The cure is worse than the ailment! Reminds me of The Black Fly Song ...

Now the bull cook's name was blind river joe
If it hadn't been for him we'd have never pulled through
For he bound up our bruises, and he kidded us for fun
And he lathered us with bacon grease and balsam gum

[For] the black flies, the little black flies
Always the black fly, no matter where you go
I'll die with the black fly a-picking my bones
In north on-tar-i-o-i-o, in north on-tar-i-o

@Roarmeister: Some people do swear by garlic, eating several raw cloves a day. This certainly will repel human females; I'm not sure about mosquito females.

For me, nothing works but DEET. Preferably on clothes, but on skin if they're really bad. If the bugs get dense enough, trust me, you won't care about hypothetical long-term effects.
