Well, no one has mentioned it but for about $30 you can get an alice pack and frame, which is pretty bombproof as far as packs go.

This is an interesting video which suggests that the Large ALICE pack sucks. (not my words) wink

If your going to be carrying more than 25-30 pounds I would avoid the Large ALICE pack like the plague. There are packs out there with modern adjustable suspension harness systems (such as catering for back height) which transfers the load to the hips i.e. such as the military packs from Lowe Alpine i.e. the Lowe Alpine Salient.

If the OP were to be more specific, it would e possible to give more specific answers. There are many high quality packs available on the market today; "tactical" tends to be a marketing buzzword and nothing mre.

For what it is worth, i have a Maxpedition Vulture II which is an adequate work pack. It is quite sturdy, but otherwise, nothing special. With a pack, fit is everything, and that varies with the individual. Also, the smaller the pack, the more likely it will fit fairly comfortably. Kelty and Mountainsmith are two brands, but not the only ones, which make well designed, sturdy packs.

Well, I'd suggest a medium over a large anyway wink Ideally the Hellcat mod which helps in the comfort department too.

No doubt there are better packs out there (and more comfortable), but like in the case of the Alpine Salient, they're usually in a completely different price category smile
