Longtime forum members will remember our threads about Oetzi, the Italian Alps mummy. Several websites have interesting new theories about the fight that ended his life, based on further research and the input of a forensic detective, archer and others.

If I remember correctly he had unhealthy levels of arsenic in his system due to copper mining and production, which didn't help his general heath. On top of that a REALLY hard life had taken its toll on his joints, especially taken together with a few old war injuries.(arrow wounds I think)
A trip over the Alps was at the best dangerous for a man in peak condition, let alone a 30 something oldtimer like himself. (30 was old in those days apparently!)
Although he perished I belive he was very well equipped - food, hunting equipment, warm clothing etc.
Quite amazing.

I think you missed the later news- they completely missed an arrowhead in his chest. The Alps did not kill him.

Man is still the most dangerous animal by far.

Experimental archaeology, or the attempted duplication of various technologies and the knowledge of contemporary practitioners in many fields is very revealing ( and fun, I want a catapult.) They dropped the goatherd theory when no goathairs were found on the mummy. A friend who weaves and raises the beasties attested to that, looking like a walking furball at her best . Archery experts found the arrows to light for dense forest use, demonstrating their specific use in those higher elevations for Ibex hunting. The lack of an intact shaft shows IT WAS REMOVED. Since Oetzi was physically incapable of doing this, and another individuals blood was found on his cape, either an opponent removed it, or he had a companion, also wounded and may have carried him a brief distance in retreat. Further searches in the area during the next melt hope to find more evidence. It's all fascinating. The gear basics are little changed, as is our sad legacy of violence.

A quick search on Google came up with this:

He's probably seen better days!
As for "our sad legacy of violence", I think its part of our genetic makeup. I don't even believe its limited to humans. I remember seeing wildlife programs where Lions are killing Cheatas, Hyena's are killing Hyena's, all over teraitory and food.
The frightening part is that after 10,000(?) years of civilisation and technological advancement we are still slaughtering ourselves and destroying the world around us.
Mankind can justly be proud of its achievements, but I think our final legacy, and the true test of our "humanity" lies in the state we leave our planet in.
(sorry, bit deep and philosophical )

Update: Having finished perusing the above link, I notice amongst other things the author lists herself as Psychic....
she does back herself up (partly) with some good links however.

Discovery had an interesting program called Iceman: Hunt for a Killer about the fight in the Alps. I recall something about the fact that he had bled out completely, which, in conjunction with the cold, help preserve his body more thoroughly. I just can't remember which of his wounds was the worst.
